The Lansing Community Council announced the winner of its 2007 Harbor Festival logo contest at the High School talent show Saturday, January 20th, 2007. 7th grader Parker Callister was brought on stage to receive a blue ribbon, a gift certificate to Cat's Pajamas, and an official Lansing Harbor Festival Pencil when Karen Veaner announced the contest results. Second grader Ashley Burt also received a ribbon, gift certificate, and pencil for her second-place entry.
The
Harbor Festival is a new community celebration of Lansing that is
scheduled for August 25 in Myers Park. The Lansing Community Council
has provided funding to Lansing programs for more than 50 years. The
group funnels United Way monies to the drop-in day care center, Lansing
Youth Services, Lansing Older Adults Program, the Lansing Food Pantry,
and the Recreation Department, and provides emergency funding for
Lansing residents in need. It hosted Lansing Day, which provided local
non-profit groups to raise funds while celebrating the community, for
ten years.

Last
year the council was rejuvenated with an entirely new group of members
who decided to create a more ambitious event that will take over all of
Myers Park for a day. Plans include entertainment, games, events,
contests, and booths featuring non-profit groups as well as local
businesses. The winning logo will be used on all printed materials for
the festival, and promotional items. Proceeds from the event will be
used to support existing programs as well as to find additional needs
in the community that need support.The theme for this year's contest
was "What Does Community Mean To You?" Town Supervisor Steve Farkas,
Village Mayor Don Hartill, and School Superintendent Mark Lewis were
the judges for the contest, which was announced in November. The
deadline for entries was December 8th.

Callister's
entry is a medallion depicting the Lansing light house on Myers Park
jutting into Cayuga Lake, shining its light as the sun sets. A boat
speeds toward a paw representing the Lansing School bobcat mascott with
"Lansing, New York" printed in it.
A poster showing the winning entry was displayed in the auditorium lobby during the intermission and after the talent show, and pencils were handed out to the crowd. The pencils feature the lighthouse element from Callister's design. Reprinted With Permission From
